The mood at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or had there never been a thread keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Surprising Presence
A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio this season. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.
He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Uncovering His True Position
It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the nature of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
